URL Masking

PHPI know that hiding the true URL of web pages is frowned upon. It can lead to abuse and be used for fraud. However, I really want to be able to use subdomains in WordPress for some of the more static content of this site such as the “photographs” and “recipes” sections. Normally the masking of URLs is done by using frames. The problem with this though is that the user can easily get “stuck” inside the frame.

How to install the Funambol / SyncML server on Ubuntu

LinuxAfter all the troubles that seem to have plagued the Ubuntu One syncing service over the last few months (does the desktop to server contacts sync work yet???) I have decided to go it alone and install my own Funambol server. This “how to” is based on Raphael Schmid’s article here, with a few observations of my own thrown in for good measure :)

First make sure that Java is correctly installed:

~$ sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre

and then download the correct 32 or 64 bit package from the Funambol website here. Alternatively download the 8.5.2 release directly to the server from this website:

How to correctly encode .mp4 files for streaming

LinuxFor HTTP pseudo-streaming to iPhones, and RTSP streaming to other mobiles, .mp4 files need to be correctly encoded.

Normally a .mp4 file has its data information included at the end which, if streamed, would require the entire video to be downloaded before playback can begin.
